I have never written daily in this blog, so I am finding this 31 Day Blog Writing Challenge, quite challenging, indeed. What in the world do I have to say, that would be of any interest to anyone else?
I went to the dentist this morning for my annual cleaning. As we often do, my hygienist and I discussed the books we are currently reading. She is re-reading, after many years, To Kill a Mockingbird. She said she had forgotten how wonderful it is. I recommended that she skip Go Set a Watchman. In my humble librarian opinion, it would not have gotten a second glance had it not had Harper Lee's name on it.
I have two books with book markers in them. One, The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, has been recommended by many friends. A novel of the woman of France who participated in the Resistance during World War II, it is often compared to All the Light We Cannot See. I am doubtful it will be that good, but I am only about 25 pages in.
The other is And West is West by Ron Childress. This debut novel won the 2014 PEN/ Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction. I have only read a few pages, so I can't really say much about the story, which deals with the impact of technology on decisions, and life. I do think it is going to be engaging and thought provoking.
I just finished The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman. This is a beautifully written, heart wrenching novel. In the 1920s, a lighthouse keeper on a remote island off the coast of Australia, finds a dead man, and a very alive infant, when a boat washes ashore. His wife, who has just lost her third baby, convinces him to not report this, but to keep the little girl. Another book about the long term impact of our decisions.
I have quilted 20 of the 120 blocks of my current quilt. Here is a peak at the back.
