This has been a fun challenge. A dear friend asked if I would be willing to make her a quilt, using fabric from some favorite tropical print clothing. All the fabric is rayon, so I wanted a pattern which would allow me to appliqué, rather than piece. I also wanted something that would emphasis the patterns in the fabric, and speak to her personality.
I decided that Orange Peel would be the perfect pattern. The blocks are 4 " finished. I used freezer paper to make the appliqué pieces. It took less than two months to cut and hand appliqué the 120 blocks.
I chose a simple outline stitch for the quilting.
The back is a funky batik, but rather light weight, so it is not difficult to quilt through.
The finished quilt will be 44" x 52". Perfect for curling up with a good book.
