I love the quiet of Sunday mornings. There is a great deal of construction in our neighborhood, as small, older houses are being torn down to make way for huge new ones. I find it sad, but it is certainly good for our local economy. The result is a lot of traffic all week, including large, loud trucks.
Little of that on Sundays, so the streets are quiet. It is a good time for reflection and observation. Here is a bit of what I saw this morning, as I wandered through the yard.
A white-throated sparrow hunting in leaves in the front yard
Virginia sweet-spire leaves. We have not had a hard freeze yet, so many plants still have leaves, and a few have flowers.
One of my favorite winter plants is Nandina. It will stay green, and have these beautiful clusters of red berries all winter. If I don't keep it in check, the Nandina will spread everywhere.
Pansies will bloom all winter here. We pull them up in May, when temperatures rise.
This is one of my favorite of our many garden ornaments, a little gargoyle overseeing the butterfly garden.
